What is an earthquake

What is an earthquake?
An earthquake is when two pieces of the earth suddenly slip past one another, the surface where they slip is called a fault place.
An earthquake can have foreshocks and aftershocks. A foreshock is a small shock that happens before the main earthquake. An aftershock is a small shock that occurs after the big earthquake.
The earth has four major layers:
Inner core, Outer core, Mantle and Crust

The tectonic plates are pieces of land that rub together and when they rub they vibrate and that causes an earthquake.
So an earthquake is caused when the tectonic plates rub violently together.
